High-Volume CNC & Traub Machined Pins

Industrial linkages, heavy machinery joints, and automotive suspensions rely heavily on precision pins and sleeves. These components act as the critical pivot points and shock absorbers in mechanical assemblies. Because they endure constant friction and immense shear forces, they must be manufactured with absolute precision and superior metallurgical strength.

At OM Engineering Works, we specialize in the high-volume production of these components. By utilizing our extensive fleet of Traub automatic lathes and high-speed CNC turning centers, we can produce tens of thousands of steel pins and sleeves rapidly, drastically reducing per-unit costs for B2B procurement managers while holding a strict ±0.01mm tolerance.

To ensure these components can withstand punishing environments—like excavator arms or industrial presses—we utilize high-grade alloy steels that undergo case hardening or induction hardening. This creates a wear-resistant exterior shell while leaving a ductile inner core that actively absorbs shock without fracturing.

Why Use Traub & CNC Machines for Pins?

  • Unmatched Speed (Traub): Our single-spindle Traub automats are designed for continuous, rapid turning of bar stock. For standard pins and sleeves, they offer a highly cost-effective mass production solution.
  • Extreme Precision (CNC): For complex pivot pins with multiple grooves, tight chamfers, or intricate internal bores, our CNC turning centers provide sub-micron accuracy and perfect repeatability.
  • Scalability: Whether you need a pilot batch of 500 specialized shock-absorbing sleeves or a continuous monthly supply of 50,000 dowel pins, our Mumbai-based facility scales to your demands.
  • Cost-Effective Procurement: By combining Traub speed with Indian manufacturing efficiency, we provide international OEMs with premium quality at globally competitive rates.

Our Expertise

How We Manufacture Pins & Sleeves

01
Verified Alloy Steel Sourcing

We source heavy-duty alloy steels like EN19 or 20MnCr5 from certified mills. MTCs (Material Test Certificates) verify the carbon and chromium content, ensuring the raw material has the inherent strength required for shock-absorbing applications.

02
High-Speed Traub / CNC Turning

For high-volume orders, the bar stock is fed into our Traub automatics for rapid forming. For complex geometries (like precise circlip grooves or tight inner bores), the components are processed in our CNC lathes. Both methods strictly maintain a ±0.01mm tolerance profile.

03
Secondary Operations (Milling/Drilling)

Many pivot pins require cross-holes for cotter pins or internal channels for grease lubrication. These operations are performed with precision to ensure structural integrity is not compromised.

04
Specialized Heat Treatment

To achieve the "shock absorption" quality, the pins undergo case hardening. This infuses carbon into the outer layer, making the surface extremely hard (wear-resistant), while the core remains softer and ductile (to absorb heavy impact shocks without snapping).

05
Centerless Grinding & Polishing

Heat treatment often causes microscopic warping. The hardened pins are passed through a centerless grinding machine, correcting any distortion and producing a perfectly polished, mirror-like finish that minimizes friction in the final assembly.

06
Digital QA & Export Packaging

Diameters are verified using digital micrometers and plug gauges. The finished pins and sleeves are coated in anti-rust oil and packed securely in heavy-duty export crates, ready for international shipment.

Steel Grades for Industrial Pins

Case Hardening Steel (20MnCr5 / EN32)

Properties: These low-carbon alloy steels are explicitly designed for case hardening. After machining, the surface is carbon-enriched and quenched. This provides a highly wear-resistant outer shell with a tough, shock-absorbing inner core.

Best For: Bushing sleeves, piston pins, linkage pins, and any application facing continuous friction combined with sudden impact loads.

Standards:

DIN 20MnCr5 BS 970 EN32 AISI 8620

High-Tensile Alloy Steel (EN19 / EN24)

Properties: Medium-carbon steels alloyed with chromium and molybdenum (and nickel in EN24). They possess immense native tensile and shear strength. They can be through-hardened or induction hardened for extreme durability.

Best For: Heavy-duty pivot pins for earthmoving equipment (excavators, loaders), high-stress automotive axles, and heavy machinery shafts.

Standards:

BS EN19 / EN24 AISI 4140 / 4340 DIN 42CrMo4

Common Questions

CNC & Traub Machined Pins — FAQs

Traub machines are single-spindle automatic lathes highly optimized for rapid, continuous turning of bar stock. For relatively straightforward cylindrical components like pins and sleeves, Traubs produce high volumes much faster than standard CNCs, drastically lowering the cost per unit while still maintaining excellent industrial tolerances.

A pin is generally a solid cylindrical piece of hardware used to align components (dowel pin) or act as a rotating fulcrum (pivot pin). A sleeve is a hollow cylinder (bushing) that fits over a shaft or pin. We manufacture both. In heavy machinery, a hardened steel pin often rotates inside a hardened steel sleeve to protect the much larger, more expensive cast housing from wear.

We achieve this through metallurgical selection and specific heat treatments (like case hardening). If a pin is too hard all the way through, it becomes brittle and will snap under a sudden impact. Case hardening creates a very hard outer "shell" that resists friction and wear, while leaving the inner core of the steel relatively soft and ductile. This tough core acts like a shock absorber, bending slightly under heavy impact rather than breaking.

Heat treatment can cause microscopic warping in the steel. Centerless grinding is a finishing process that removes a tiny layer of metal post-hardening to ensure the pin is perfectly cylindrical (restoring the ±0.01mm tolerance). It also provides a polished, mirror-like finish that drastically reduces friction when the pin is in operation.
